Browser Extension
WuCai Highlight
Highlight, annotate and take notes on the web, clip articles for later — then keep it all organised with nested tags and folders.
WuCai Highlight is a browser extension for highlighting, annotating and taking notes on web pages. Select any text to highlight it or attach a thought; clip a whole article and come back to it when you have time.
Highlights, notes and clipped articles live in one library, organised with nested tags and nested folders. When you need them elsewhere, copy or export them — or sync them to Obsidian, Siyuan, flomo, Logseq or Workflowy.
WuCai Highlight has been online since March 2022, and runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, as well as on phone and tablet.
In one line: what you read on a page should not stay trapped on that page.

What WuCai Highlight helps you do
Highlight: keep the parts that matter
Select text to highlight it, in the colour you prefer. Add an annotation or a thought to a highlight, or write one page-level note for the whole page. Images can be highlighted too, and local HTML files can be annotated just like live pages. When you need the page exactly as it looked, take a screenshot of the original.
Organise: tags and folders put the fragments back
Knowledge on the web arrives in pieces. One article can belong to “product design” and “competitor research” at once — and once you have read it, it is gone.
Folders express where something belongs; tags express what it is about. Cross the two, and the same piece of content can be found again from several directions — for highlights, notes and articles alike, with multiple levels of both.
Clip: bring what you mean to read into one library
Articles you read inside WeChat are the easiest ones to lose: they seem worth keeping at the time, but the only option is forwarding them to yourself. WuCai Helper handles that step — clip a WeChat article into WuCai, or save a chat message.
Once saved, it sits in the same library as the pages you highlight in your browser, under the same tags and folders, so reading it later does not mean scrolling back through a chat. Full web pages can be clipped as well.
Export: let your annotations reach the tools you use
A highlight is only useful if it can leave the page. WuCai Highlight supports copy and export, and syncs with Obsidian, Siyuan, flomo, Workflowy and Logseq — collect here, keep writing in the tool you already use, with no second round of copy-paste.
For developers there is also an open API and WuCai CLI: manage and export annotations in bulk from a terminal, or wire WuCai into tools such as uTools, PopClip and Quicker.
Typical use cases
1. Mark up an article while you read
Open a long report or tutorial, highlight as you go, and leave a note wherever you disagree. You do not have to tidy anything up straight away — the article and its highlights stay in your library, and when you reopen the page the marks are still where you left them.
2. Build a library around a topic
Material on one topic is usually scattered: a few web articles, a few WeChat posts, some reference pages. Collect them with a folder, mark the sub-topics with tags, and review by tag later. It is much faster than scrolling through bookmarks.
3. Send your annotations into Obsidian and write
Highlight while you research, then see those highlights in Obsidian while you write, ready to quote or rework. And if you change tools, nothing is locked in — annotations can be exported.
How it compares with bookmarks and copy-paste
| WuCai Highlight | Browser bookmarks | Copy into a document | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highlight and annotate | Yes, with colour options | No | Copy by hand |
| Source of the quote | Link and position kept, page can be reopened | Link only | Easily lost |
| WeChat articles | Clipped with WuCai Helper | No | Paste by hand |
| Organisation | Nested tags and folders | Flat folders | Up to you |
| Export and sync | Obsidian, Siyuan, flomo, Logseq, Workflowy; API, CLI | Follows the browser account | Manual |
A bookmark remembers the link, but not which paragraph you marked or what you thought at the time. That is the gap WuCai Highlight fills: it turns “I read that” into an annotation you can return to.
Sync servers and your data
Your data is stored in the cloud, so highlights, notes and articles follow your account across browsers and devices. Data is deployed per region — pick the region closest to you for the fastest sync, using the matching server address in the extension settings:
| Region | Server | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Asia | marker.dotalk.cn |
Node hosted in mainland China; fastest for users in Asia. |
| Europe | eu.wucainote.com |
For the UK, France, Germany, Russia and other European countries. Extension version must be >= 25.1.17. |
| America | us.wucainote.com |
For the United States, Canada, Mexico and other North American countries. Extension version must be >= 25.1.17. |
See the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service for how accounts, sync and data are handled, and the Help Center for choosing and switching servers.
FAQ
Is WuCai Highlight free?
Core features are free and can be used indefinitely. Advanced features are offered as a paid membership, taken up only if you need them. In Asia there are also education and newcomer offers — see the website for what each plan includes and current pricing.
Which browsers are supported?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, plus Chromium-based browsers such as Lemur, Kiwi and Rainsee. Phone and tablet apps are available too.
Do I need an account?
Yes — sign up with an email address. Once signed in, your highlights, notes and articles sync to the cloud, so a new browser or device only needs the same login.
Can I sync highlights to Obsidian?
Yes. Siyuan, flomo, Logseq and Workflowy are supported as well; if you would rather not connect another tool, copy and export work too.
How do I save a WeChat article?
Use WuCai Helper to clip it. The article lands in the same library as your web highlights, under the same tags and folders. WuCai Helper can save chat messages as well.
Can I highlight images and local HTML files?
Yes to both — images can be highlighted and local HTML files annotated.
Will my highlights be lost if I switch devices?
No. They live in your account in the cloud, so reinstalling the extension or moving to a new device only requires signing in again. You can also export them at any time.
Is there an API or a command-line tool?
Yes. WuCai Highlight offers an open API and WuCai CLI for managing and exporting annotations in bulk, and for connecting to other productivity tools.
Install and get started
Chrome and Edge
Search for “WuCai Highlight” in the Chrome Web Store or Microsoft Edge Add-ons and install it. Sign in, then select any text on a page to start highlighting.
Firefox
Search for “WuCai Highlight” in Firefox Add-ons. Lemur, Kiwi and Rainsee are supported as well.
Phone and tablet
Install WuCai from your app store and sign in with the same account; highlights, notes and articles sync with your desktop.
For a first run, highlight one line on a site you read often, add a note, and put it in a new folder — that is more useful than designing a tag system before you have anything in it.
